Published with Blogger-droid v1.6.5

Course was inspected at first light and unfortunately still remains closed.
There has been a good thaw over the weekend but still no options available for a restricted course.
There are still a number of paths & temp greens which have 1-2" of compacted snow making them impassable and unplayable.
We will salt the paths to try and break it up but the forecast is also against us with sub zero temperatures most of this week.
This severe weather has let the staff carry on with painting duties and to date all 18 benches stained & varnished and now working our way through the picnic tables.

The big thaw

Well what a week.
Finally can get on with the clear up. Captains day on Saturday so well on with clearing car park and area on 1 st tee for both captains to send one down the middle. ( they hope )
Unfortunately the terrible weather has took its toll on the swans and we have had to have them taken away by sspca who will relocate them.

Week ending 26th Nov

Winter is finally upon us. Hopefully we wont get the snow this weekend that is forecast.
The start of the week allowed us to transplant some 40 odd trees a mixture of beech, lime & holly from woodland areas to right 8th, right 10th & 14th, left 15th. We concentrated in replacing dead trees and weak trees before strengthening any corpses.
The freezing conditions allowed us to transport large sand stone from the woods left 3rd to enhance pond features at holes 10 & 13. We also transplanted iris and tall reeds to the same ponds finishing the look of the ponds off well.
Graham Webster was on site on Thursday myself and some members of the committee walked areas of the course we are looking to strengthen and discussed possible projects.

WEEK ENDING 19th NOV

One of the better weeks
The start of the week seen some freezing temperatures going as low as -4 then we had some milder weather and strong winds.
This was ideal to see the last of the leaves coming down and with good ground conditions no problem getting machinery out to clear up.
At the start of the week we cleared along boundary fence from 15th ladies tee to behind the 9th green this will speed up maintaining boundary during the season and it certainly looks allot better.
With the better weather conditions we managed to get greens & temps, tees & temps, approaches, & fairways cut.
The soil greens were pencil tinned to a depth 2" to keep the surface open improving water movement and aerating surface of the green.
All tees had a application of a light liquid feed and chelated iron to harden off going into the winter and improve colour.
I attended the committee outing on Friday and would like to thank my playing partner Andrew ( chief ) for playing so well and cementing a victory against the vice captain and the managing secretary, good company thanks again.

week ending 12 November

It was a fairly unsettled week with nearly 2" rain recorded on days Thu Fri.
At the start of the week we managed to get greens brushed cut along with the tees and approaches.
During the winter months we are susceptible to some moss trying to establish on our greens mainly on the new greens and areas were water would sit during prolonged periods of rain. We combat this by applying light nutrient application on the greens that have a percentage of iron and in more problematic areas spot treatment with a mossicide is used.
All temp greens were sprayed with a worm suppressant to control worm casts.
All course furniture and tables clubhouse brought in for winter months and will be varnished.
The weather near end week went down hill all painting duties started up, machines stripped & cleaned in prep for winter overhauls.
Our irrigation system was shut down ( in house ) all water drained from system and pump, all valves opened. The system will be pressured back up some time march.
Friday morning my self, Kevin met greens convener Eric discussed and walked areas In proposed winter programme.

Week ending 5 Nov

Well thank god that week is over we had close to 40mm rain. The drying room put to good use this week.
The low section of the course struggled and from tue to fri we had to restrict the course, holes in play 1-11, 17 & 18.
On a positive note our older style pushup greens 1,2,9,11,14,15,16,17 & 18 although some days having surface water on them still remain very firm underfoot.
This week seen the start of our winter course, blue stakes out to restrict play from fairways & ropes out to traffic the golfers using powered caddies.
There was a big effort blowing & removing leaves to stop any die back as a result of the leaves lying to long.
We also extend astro turf path right 6 green to help keep good grass covering to what has been a bottle neck in the past. We will be covering the problematic golpla paths with astro turf & see what feedback we get from the members.
With the adverse weather main greens & temp greens were the only cutting this week.
On wednesday afternoon all the staff attended our national show Ingliston near Edinburgh airport the show was quieter than previous years but still good to see old faces and see what is new in the industry.
Finally thank you to James who was with us this week on work experience not a great week for working outdoors on the course but he seemed to take it in his stride.

week starting 25th october

Its been a while sorry if you have been following but as usual it been a very busy season so will update blogg weakly from now on.
Well this season has been one of the driest, recorded rain fall levels show a third less to date on the previous two seasons. The course has went back after this weeks rain with condition underfoot allot softer.
This week tees & approaches cut, greens brushed cut twice,
Course set up in the mornings takes longer at this time of year as leaves, pine needles need blown and removed.
We have started addressing areas that are overgrowing and encroaching on the course see fliker account
www.flickr.com/photos/16068144@N08/
With the adverse weather we seen this week the facility got some much needed work cleaning organising parts etc
Painting duties markers hole cups pins etc all started.
Machinery will start to be striped down and prepared for winter overhauls
Health safety is very important these days and the facility has two inspections a year so we have to be on top of all aspects of H&S. This week I started updating my staffs training manual and all relevant info in staff quarters.
We moved the temporary astroturf path at 10th to get the golfer up to the 11th tee. We will be installing a path to the left side of the green this winter so next season trolleys can access the 11th tee from the back 10th green.
For the next four months all staff on winter hours so it is a reduced working week.

course update

Its been frustrating spring so far. Ground temperatures still below 10 degrees were we need 11 or 12 degrees for consistent growth.
The new seeded areas are coming on ok just need some warmer weather.

The new fountain at 13th looks great and finishes the hole off.

We are well into our routine cutting and course definition is good.

Saturday, 17 April 2010

A GREAT WEEK

The weather this week let us get on with a number of jobs.
At the start of the week all areas still to be shaped and seeded completed.

After seeding jobs with dry mornings and sunny afternoons conditions could not have been better for scarifying fairways all completed cleaned the fairways up great.

At the end of the week we were irrigating after applying a 6-9-6 to seeded areas and a 12-6-6 to all areas seeded last october to bring some earlie growth on.

Frosty morning -3 but beautiful

Cold morning.

We will brush & cut greens today when the frost lifts at 5.5mm and with the firm ground conditions start removing wood pilled from the felled tree that was leaning right 17th green.
